Punjab Government’s meeting on GST

The Punjab government is in the process of devising the ‘Bill Lao-Inam Pao’ initiative, which will be a topic of discussion in the upcoming meeting. The primary objective of this scheme is to bolster GST collection. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasised that this scheme would curtail the evasion of bill payments by shopkeepers, ultimately leading to a rise in revenue.

Of greater concern to Punjab is the fact that its GST collection is merely a quarter of Haryana’s. Concurrently, the taxation department has persistently endeavoured to enforce this scheme. The state administration has developed the requisite portal, and subsequently, an awareness campaign will be conducted to acquaint people with the incentives associated with maintaining bills.

Punjab’s GST collection a quarter to Haryana’s collection

Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Cheema highlighted the significant disparity in the state’s GST collection. Despite the earnest efforts made by the state government in the past year, there has been a commendable increase of over 26 percent in GST collection. However, there remains untapped potential for further enhancement. In comparison to neighboring Haryana, the minister noted that Punjab’s GST collection is a mere quarter. The recent July report shows Punjab’s collection at just Rs 2000 crore, while Haryana’s exceeds Rs 7900 crore.

Officials from the Taxation Department explained that Haryana’s location in the NCR grants it substantial advantages, unlike Punjab, which is landlocked and faces the challenge of tax exemptions in nearby hill states. This situation has led to the migration of numerous industries from Punjab. In response, the Punjab government’s viable option is to augment tax collection from the existing industrial base.
