AAP treating worse than Mughals: Channi on being questioned by Vigilance Bureau

The former chief minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi, was questioned by government officials for nearly seven hours on Friday when he appeared before the Vigilance Bureau in relation to a case involving excessive assets. Channi branded the investigation as “totally political”.

The bureau has been looking into claims that Channi has developed assets that are out of proportion to his known source of income. The bureau had issued a watch notice on the former chief minister last month.

Channi once more attacked the AAP administration as she left the Vigilance Bureau’s Mohali office in the evening, saying that “this government is treating worse than even the Mughals.” They seek to degrade and humiliate you in whatever way they can.

“In democracy, this is not the way… that without any basis they try to build up a case. I stand by what I said earlier in the morning at my press conference, they may do whatever they have to,” Channi told reporters outside the VB’s Mohali office. “I always worked with honesty and will continue to do so,” he said.

AAP government has launched a war against corruption

Harpal Singh Cheema, the finance minister for Punjab, said the AAP government has launched a war against corruption. He said that if Channi has nothing to hide, he shouldn’t have any trouble facing the VB investigation.

Cheema asserted that Channi is playing a drama and made reference to the Enforcement Directorate’s action against Bhupinder Singh Honey, the nephew of a Congress leader, who had been arrested in connection with an alleged money laundering scheme involving illicit sand mining in the border state last year.

The Congress leader had criticised the state’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for moving up his appearance date and said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration was engaging in “vendetta politics” before visiting the bureau’s Mohali office at around 11 a.m.

Before entering the bureau’s office, Channi spoke at a press conference and launched a harsh attack on the AAP administration, warning that he “may be tortured, arrested, or even killed” but that he is ready to face whatever comes his way.

The former CM sobbed, “Hang me if even one person says Channi was engaging in any corrupt practise.”
