Bhagwant Mann Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has voiced strong support for the state government’s groundwater conservation initiatives, highlighting a series of measures aimed at improving water management and ensuring sustainable irrigation across Punjab.

Speaking on the issue, Cheema said the Punjab government is strengthening the state’s irrigation network by lining canals and distributaries and expanding pipeline infrastructure to ensure canal water reaches every agricultural field. The initiative is intended to reduce dependence on groundwater and promote efficient use of surface water for farming.

He added that the government is continuing to implement long-term strategies to address water depletion and improve the state’s water resources.
Cheema also announced that work on the Malwa Canal project is progressing and will be completed at the earliest. The canal is expected to enhance irrigation facilities and improve water availability for farmers across the region.
In addition, he said approval has been granted for 510 large groundwater recharge wells, a key step in boosting groundwater replenishment and strengthening Punjab’s water conservation infrastructure.
The Bhagwant Mann-led government has maintained that expanding canal irrigation, accelerating recharge projects, and modernising water infrastructure remain central to its strategy for protecting groundwater resources while supporting farmers and sustainable agricultural development.
