Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed the state police and administration to take immediate steps to address the unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara and ensure that the situation remains under control.
The Chief Minister instructed Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav to personally visit the university, assess the situation on the ground and oversee the law-and-order arrangements.

Bhagwant Mann Directs DGP to Review Situation
Following the developments at LPU, Bhagwant Mann directed the DGP to personally assess the situation and ensure appropriate action.
The direction came amid student protests over allegations concerning the safety of a student on the university campus. An FIR has been registered in connection with the allegation and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct a detailed investigation.
Punjab Police Focuses on Dialogue With Students
During his visit to LPU, DGP Gaurav Yadav said the police had adopted a restrained approach while engaging with students and worked to address their grievances through dialogue with the university administration.
According to the DGP, police officers facilitated discussions between students and university authorities on issues raised by the students, including demands concerning arrangements at girls’ hostels.
SIT to Investigate Allegations
The Punjab Police has constituted an SIT to investigate the allegations that triggered the student unrest. The investigation will examine the available evidence, including CCTV footage and other relevant material.
The DGP said action would be taken according to law following the investigation and that those found responsible for vandalism would also face action.
Law and Order Measures Strengthened
The Punjab Police deployed additional personnel at the university as authorities worked to stabilise the situation. Following the unrest, the Delhi-Amritsar highway outside the university was cleared and traffic movement was restored.
The Mann government has directed the administration to address the students’ concerns while ensuring that the investigation into the allegations proceeds through the established legal process.
