In a public statement, the minister argued that securing international borders and preventing the entry of illegal drugs into the country are primarily responsibilities of the central government. He stated that if narcotics continue to reach Punjab, accountability should also extend to the authorities responsible for border management and national security.

Dr. Balbir Singh criticized what he described as attempts to place the entire burden of the drug problem on the state, emphasizing that the issue requires coordinated action between the Centre and state governments. He said that addressing drug trafficking effectively demands stronger measures to prevent the supply of narcotics before they enter Punjab.

Punjab have consistently stood against the menace of drugs

The minister maintained that the Punjab government has been undertaking extensive efforts against drug abuse through enforcement drives, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation initiatives. He noted that action against drug networks must be accompanied by measures aimed at preventing smuggling routes and illegal supply chains.

According to Dr. Singh, the people of Punjab have consistently stood against the menace of drugs and remain committed to safeguarding the interests of the state’s youth. He said citizens, law enforcement agencies, and government institutions must work together to protect future generations from the harmful effects of substance abuse.

The remarks come amid continuing political debate over responsibility for drug trafficking and the measures required to curb the narcotics trade. Drug abuse and cross-border smuggling remain major public policy concerns in Punjab, with governments and agencies at different levels continuing efforts to address the issue.

Punjab authorities have repeatedly stated that eliminating the drug menace requires a comprehensive strategy involving enforcement, rehabilitation, public awareness, and stronger mechanisms to prevent the inflow of narcotics into the state.
