In a major administrative step, the Punjab government has introduced a new policy aimed at strengthening grassroots governance. Under the latest directive issued by the Bhagwant Mann–led government, village sarpanches will now receive a “Maan Allowance” directly from Panchayat income.
Income-Based Allowance Structure
According to the official announcement:
- Panchayats with their own income will manage the funds for the allowance independently.
- Panchayats without income will receive financial support from the Block Samiti, ensuring uniform benefit across rural areas.
This move aims to empower village-level leadership and motivate sarpanches to take a more active role in local development and administrative responsibilities.
Maan Allowance Increased Earlier
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier increased the honorarium of sarpanches from ₹1,200 to ₹2,000, acknowledging their vital contribution to strengthening rural governance.
Boost to Rural Administration
The updated policy is expected to:
- Increase transparency in panchayat funds
- Provide financial stability to village leadership
- Encourage improved participation in development activities
- Strengthen decentralised governance across Punjab
