At the ‘Walk for Drug-Free Chandigarh’ event, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made a passionate appeal to the youth and citizens to reject glorification of drugs and choose healthier, inspirational figures as role models.
CM Bhagwant Mann at Anti-Drug Walk in Chandigarh
Addressing the gathering, CM Mann said, “Today I can see a revolution against drugs in Chandigarh.” Emphasizing the need to reshape societal role models, he urged, “Don’t make the singers who sing songs promoting drugs your icons. If you want a role model, let it be Milkha Singh or Harmanpreet Singh.”
“People of Punjab are famous for joining the army..."
He expressed concern over the fading legacy of Punjab’s proud history of physical strength and patriotism, saying, “People of Punjab are famous for joining the army, for wrestling, for kabaddi, and for bhangra. But our fame has faded.” Drawing a powerful metaphor, he added, “If the stone in a ring gets faded, then the ring's value diminishes. If Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh shine, the whole country will shine.”
Mann's remarks reflect the growing concern over drug abuse in the region and the cultural shift towards music that often glorifies substance use. The event drew participation from students, activists, and public figures united in the cause for a drug-free future.
According to a 2022 report by the Punjab government, over 9 lakh people have registered for de-addiction treatment under the state’s Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) program, indicating the widespread reach of substance abuse, particularly opioids, across both rural and urban areas of Punjab.
