The AAP Punjab on Friday accused senior Congress leader Pratap Bajwa of insulting the Dalit community through alleged objectionable remarks directed at Punjab minister Harbhajan Singh ETO. The party said the comments were offensive and demanded a public apology.
AAP Protests Against Pratap Bajwa Over Alleged Remarks Targeting Dalit Community
In protest, the Aam Aadmi Party organized a demonstration in Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, led by MLA Rupinder Happy along with SC Wing president Gurpreet Singh GP. Protesters raised slogans and condemned the alleged statement, calling it disrespectful toward marginalized communities.
Party representatives stated that the organization would not tolerate any form of derogatory language against the Dalit community and urged Bajwa to issue an immediate apology. They also warned that further protests could follow if no clarification or apology is issued.
No immediate response from Pratap Bajwa or his party was available at the time of reporting
Party leaders said the protest was organized to send a strong message against what they described as caste-insensitive rhetoric in public discourse. They emphasized that political leaders hold positions of responsibility and should maintain language that respects all sections of society, particularly historically marginalized communities.
According to party representatives, memorandums highlighting their objections are also expected to be submitted to local administrative authorities, seeking appropriate action and a formal clarification regarding the alleged remarks. Supporters present at the protest carried placards and chanted slogans condemning caste-based insults and calling for accountability from public representatives.
Political observers note that the controversy could further intensify tensions between the ruling party in Punjab and the opposition Indian National Congress, especially as both sides have frequently accused each other of making provocative statements. Analysts say such disputes often become flashpoints in state politics, particularly when they involve sensitive social issues.
Meanwhile, community leaders have urged restraint from all sides and appealed for dialogue to resolve the matter peacefully. They stressed that public discourse should focus on governance and development rather than statements that may deepen social divisions.
