The Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann government has intensified its campaign against child begging under Project Jeevanjyot, with a focus on rescuing vulnerable children from the streets, rehabilitating them and helping them return to education and a life of dignity.

Punjab’s Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, Dr. Baljit Kaur, said the state government is firmly committed to protecting the rights and future of every child and ensuring that children are free from begging, exploitation and insecurity.

She said the government aims to provide every child with an environment that guarantees safety, education and dignity, while taking effective steps to identify and assist children found in vulnerable circumstances.
According to the minister, Project Jeevanjyot is being implemented through District-Level Task Forces across Punjab. These teams are undertaking focused interventions to rescue children involved in begging and connect them with appropriate rehabilitation and welfare support.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the campaign is part of the government’s broader efforts to safeguard children from exploitation and ensure that they have access to opportunities necessary for their development and education.
The minister also shared details of the districts from where the highest number of children were rescued during the special campaign. Tarn Taran recorded the highest number with 10 rescued children, followed by Amritsar with 9, Ludhiana with 7 and S.A.S. Nagar with 5.
The government said that rescuing children from begging is only one part of the initiative, with subsequent efforts focused on rehabilitation and reconnecting them with education and a more secure future.
The campaign also seeks to strengthen coordination at the district level so that vulnerable children can be identified and provided timely assistance. The involvement of district-level task forces is intended to make the implementation of Project Jeevanjyot more effective across the state.
