Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann says no to affiliation of Haryana colleges with Panjab University

After the second round of meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the presence of Governor Banwarilal Purohit regarding Punjab University (PU), Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has refused to affiliate Haryana colleges with Panjab University. Haryana is demanding recognition of its colleges from PU. In this matter, now the third round of talks will be held on July 3.

Mann says no to affiliation of Haryana colleges with Panjab University

CM Mann said that when Haryana wants to talk, we will listen, however, we do not agree to affiliate colleges of Haryana with PU. They brought Kurukshetra University for their colleges, now why are they refusing to accept the value of their own university?

The Chief Minister said, ‘PU is the heritage of Punjab, which has been woven from the sentiments, culture and literature of the people. The original university campus in Lahore was shifted to Hoshiarpur after partition. It was originally divided in the share of 20:20:20:40 for the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and the Centre. In 1970, former Chief Minister of Haryana, Bansilal had said that the state was backing away from affiliating its colleges with PU. That’s why in 1973, Haryana also decided not to be a part of the PU Senate.

He said that I was told in the meeting today that Haryana is ready to give its share to the university and its colleges should be affiliated to PU. Showing a three-day-old letter from the Additional Chief Secretary of Haryana, he said that the Vice Chancellors in Haryana have been asked to manage their own funds. When they don’t have money for their educational institutions what will they give us.

Questioning the intention of the previous governments in the state, CM Mann showed the No Objection Certificate issued by former CM Parkash Singh Badal, which said that Punjab had no objection to making PU a Central University. He said that if it was in the power of the Badals, they would have sold every institution in Punjab. CM Mann referred to two letters written by his government to the Center to stop all efforts to convert PU into a Central University.

He said that already 35 per cent students in the campus are from Haryana and they are welcome to join us. However, we will not allow Haryana colleges to be affiliated to PU. Actually the politicians of Haryana are seeking entry in the University Senate for political reasons. Notably, Haryana is demanding affiliation of its colleges with PU, Chandigarh.
