Punjab: Customs seizes antique Buddha sculpture

A 2000-year-old statue of Buddha has been seized at the Wagah border in Punjab. This idol is being told of second or third century. Custom officials informed about this. This statue of Buddha was recovered from a foreign traveler during checking at Attari-Wagah border. The commissioner of the Customs Department said that during the checking, the foreign traveler was stopped for checking at the check post.

His luggage was checked. During this, the authorities recovered an ancient stone idol of Lord Buddha from him, which seems to be from the 2nd or 3rd century. Information about this matter was given to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Chandigarh Circle. After this, the ASI gave its report confirming this.

Buddha statue from the 2nd or 3rd century

“The ASI has now confirmed and reported that the piece of sculpture appears to be a Buddha of the Gandhara School of Art and tentatively dates to the 2nd or 3rd century,” Amritsar Customs Commissioner Rahul Nangre said in a statement. The statue comes under the category of antiquity under the Antiquities and Art Treasury Act, 1972.

The idol was confiscated under this act

This stone idol has been confiscated under the Antiquities and Art Treasury Act, 1972. Now further action is being taken on this related to the Act. Even before this, many such cases have come to the fore. In May 2017, 262 ancient coins were seized from a passenger in the Attari train. At the same time, in September 2018, another 65 ancient coins were seized from a passenger in the Attari train.
