Punjab: The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government today terminated the licences of 813 weapons in the province in a major measure against the so-called “gun culture” in the state. 87 licences were invalidated in Ludhiana Rural, 48 in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, 10 in Gurdaspur, 84 in Faridkot, 199 in Pathankot, 47 in Hoshiapur, 6 in Kapurthala, 235 in SAS Kasba, and 16 in Sangrur. Weapons licences for 27 people in Amritsar Commissionerate, 11 in Jalandhar Commissionerate, and many more have been revoked. So far, the Punjab government has revoked almost 2,000 weapons licences.
Details of the government’s recent action against weapons licenses
The state administration stated that rules must be observed in order to maintain guns, and that there is now a restriction on carrying and displaying weapons in public activities, religious sites, marriage ceremonies, or any other events in Punjab. The government of the Aam Aadmi Party has declared that glorification of violence and firearms will be prohibited, and that random checks will be conducted in various regions in the coming days.

Impact of the government’s crackdown on weapons licenses in Punjab
Punjab has a total of 3,73,053 weapons licences. The Punjab administration says it regularly takes steps to end ‘gun culture’. Last year’s murder of 28-year-old Punjabi artist Sidhu Moose Wala drew to light the ubiquitous glorification of weapons in Punjabi pop culture, prompting calls for regulation. The prominent musician, who has 8.1 million Instagram followers, has been accused of fostering gun culture because he is seen posing with firearms in videos and images. In reality, he was charged when pictures of him discharging a firearm went viral.
