Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Bhullar marked a historic milestone by handing over appointment letters to 15 Junior Basic Teachers (JBTs) in the jail department. This is the first regular recruitment in the department in 30 years, reflecting the government's commitment to modernizing correctional facilities and focusing on prisoner rehabilitation.

Milestones in Jail Department Recruitment

The department has achieved significant progress in addressing staffing needs:

Recruitment of 738 warders and 25 matrons completed.

179 guard positions are currently under recruitment.

Plans to fill 1,220 additional posts are underway.

These efforts aim to strengthen the workforce, ensuring better management and operations within correctional facilities across Punjab.

Focus on Education for Rehabilitation

The newly appointed JBT teachers will play a crucial role in educating prisoners and their children, facilitating their reintegration into society. As part of the department’s education initiatives:

Over 2,200 prisoners have enrolled in various academic courses.

Vocational training programs for 513 prisoners will begin in January 2025, equipping them with skills to secure employment upon release.
