Punjab News: The Punjab government has announced a new agricultural policy aimed at supporting the state’s farmers and improving agricultural practices. The draft of this policy has been released and will soon be subject to feedback from farmers and experts in the field before its final implementation.
Mann Government Unveils Comprehensive Agricultural Policy
Key highlights of the policy include the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all crops and a proposed pension scheme for farmers and laborers owning less than five acres of land. Additionally, a new initiative called the “Pani Bachao Paisa Kamayo Scheme” is being introduced to provide special incentives to farmers who conserve water and save electricity.

Enhancements to the Public Distribution System (PDS) and a push for organic farming and crop diversification are also featured in the draft. The Punjab government is advised to present these issues to the central government for further consideration.
Moreover, the policy places a significant emphasis on women in agriculture. It suggests exploring options for granting land ownership rights to women and prioritizing women engaged in agricultural activities when leasing village land.
Earlier, during the Punjab government’s monsoon session, farmers from the Bharatiya Kisan Ekta Ugrahan staged a protest in Chandigarh, bringing these issues to the forefront of the Punjab Assembly. Following this, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with farmers at the Punjab Bhavan, assuring them that the agricultural policy would be released by September 30. The meeting also addressed various other related issues.
