Punjab News: The Punjab government has directed district authorities to ensure strict enforcement of the ban on stubble burning, with penal action by the police against farmers who violate the law. This includes active field visits by deputy commissioners to monitor hot spots within their districts.
The action plan to prevent farm fires was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma with deputy commissioners on Tuesday. During the meeting, officials emphasized the need for rigorous enforcement and accountability.
Police to Take Action Against Violators
A directive has been issued to field staff to take prompt penal action through the police against farmers found burning stubble, as adequate Crop Residue Management (CRM) equipment is being made available to them. The government has provided machinery such as happy seeders and mulchers to help farmers manage crop residue without resorting to burning.
In a bid to intensify efforts, district authorities were reminded that failure to control stubble burning would result in disciplinary action. As per Supreme Court directions issued last year, the police administration has been instructed to hold local Station House Officers (SHOs) accountable. If stubble burning is reported within their jurisdiction, disciplinary measures will be taken against the SHO in charge.
Government’s Commitment to Prevent Air Pollution
The move follows increasing concerns over air pollution caused by stubble burning, which significantly affects air quality during the winter season. The Punjab government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing environmental hazards and promoting sustainable farming practices through the active involvement of both the civil and police administration.
Officials have also emphasized the need for public awareness and cooperation from farmers to help curb this harmful practice.
