In a major development under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration, the Punjab Police has busted a highly organized drug and contraband smuggling racket operating from inside Sangrur Jail, exposing a disturbing nexus between jail officials and criminal elements.

50 grams of opium

Class-IV Employee and DSP Involved in Smuggling Network
Preliminary investigations have pointed to the involvement of a Class-IV jail employee, who allegedly played a key role in facilitating the entry and distribution of contraband items.
As the probe deepened, police arrested Manpreet Singh from Amritsar, a known associate of inmate Gurvinder Singh, currently lodged in Sangrur Jail. From Manpreet’s possession, police recovered:
4 kg of heroin
₹5.5 lakh in drug money
A Glock pistol with live rounds
DSP Security of Jail Arrested for Active Role
The investigation took a more serious turn when DSP Security, Sangrur Jail – Gurpreet Singh – was arrested for his direct involvement in the smuggling operations. Police revealed that the DSP had been actively smuggling drugs and mobile phones into the jail and was receiving payments through UPI accounts linked to his family members.
Authorities are now pursuing backward and forward linkages, and more arrests are likely in the coming days.
Zero Tolerance Towards Internal Collusion: Punjab Police
The Punjab Police, under the leadership of DGP Gaurav Yadav, reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and internal compromise.
“No individual – regardless of rank or position – will be spared if found involved in illegal activities,” the DGP emphasized.
State’s War Against Drugs Intensifies
This development comes amid Punjab's intensified efforts to combat the drug menace, a key promise made by CM Bhagwant Mann. With increasing scrutiny of jail infrastructure and internal corruption, the government is doubling down on breaking the nexus between law enforcement and criminal syndicates.
