In a major breakthrough, Counter Intelligence Amritsar has busted an illegal weapon smuggling module operating with connections to Pakistan, arresting a key operative and seizing arms, ammunition, and cash.
Specific Tip-off Leads to Major Arrest
Acting on a specific intelligence input, the Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police launched a targeted operation in Amritsar, leading to the arrest of Abhishek Kumar. During the operation, authorities recovered seven pistols — including five .30 bore pistols and two Glock 9mm pistols — along with four live cartridges (.30 bore) and ₹1,50,000 in cash from his possession.
Smuggling Nexus Linked to Australia and Pakistan
Investigations have revealed that the operation was part of a larger international network masterminded by an Australia-based individual, identified as Jassa. Working closely with Pakistan-based smugglers, Jassa orchestrated the smuggling of illegal arms and ammunition across the Indo-Pak border, utilizing local associates including Jodhbir Singh alias Jodha and Abhishek Kumar.
The network appears to be highly organized, with smugglers coordinating cross-border activities while maintaining strong links with operatives within India.
Hawala Transactions and Broader Criminal Web
Preliminary probes further indicated that the accused, Abhishek Kumar and Jodhbir Singh @ Jodha, were involved in Hawala transactions, suggesting financial operations tied to a broader syndicate engaged in serious criminal activities. This raises concerns about the scope and objectives of the smuggling network, pointing to a deeper nexus between arms trafficking and illegal money transfers.
FIR Registered, Further Investigation Underway
An FIR has been registered at SSOC (State Special Operation Cell) Amritsar. Punjab Police has assured that a thorough investigation is underway to apprehend other associates and uncover all backward and forward linkages related to the module.
The Punjab Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and harmony across the state, vowing to continue cracking down on such anti-national elements.
"Punjab Police remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the state's security and dismantle networks threatening its peace," said a spokesperson.
