In view of the continuously intensifying cold wave and dense fog across Punjab, the state government has announced an extension of school holidays till January 7. The decision has been taken under the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, keeping in mind the health and safety of students and school staff.
Punjab Schools Closed Till January 7 Due to Cold Wave
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains informed that the holiday extension will apply to all government, aided, recognised, and private schools across the state. The move aims to protect children from extreme weather conditions, which have led to a sharp drop in temperatures and poor visibility in several districts.
Classes to Resume on January 8
According to the official announcement, all schools in Punjab will now reopen on January 8 and function as per normal schedules. The education department has advised school administrations to ensure a smooth transition once classes resume and to remain alert to any further weather advisories.
Over the past few days, Punjab has witnessed severe cold conditions accompanied by heavy fog during morning hours, affecting daily life and raising concerns about children commuting to schools. Parents and teachers had been urging the government to extend holidays, citing health risks such as cold-related illnesses.
The state government has reiterated that student safety remains its top priority and that decisions will continue to be taken based on weather conditions and expert advisories. Officials have also asked parents to ensure proper winter precautions for children once schools reopen.
The announcement has brought relief to students and parents alike, as the extended break provides protection during the peak winter period. The Punjab government has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take further steps if required in the interest of public health and education continuity.
