Sand quarry shut in Fazilka sue to completion of annual quota of extraction

A legal sand quarry located in Jalalabad subdivision of Fazilka district has been closed. SDO (Mining) Gitesh Upweja said that the mine was closed due to completion of the annual quota of sand extraction.

Sources said another mine located at Tharewala village in Jalalabad was closed a fortnight ago for the same reason. Sources said three of the four mines were reportedly closed due to extraction of prescribed quantity from the mines.

Sources said that now only the sand mine of Bada-2 village was operational. Upweja said more mines would be started soon after getting fresh approval from the government.

Sources said 19 more sites were selected for mining by the mining department in Fazilka district, but none could start.

The reason was that the owners of the land were not willing to give sand to the government at the fixed rate of Rs 2 per cubic feet.

Notably, the government is offering sand at the rate of Rs 5.5 per cubic feet plus GST to the consumer and paying Rs 2 to land owners.
