For many Indian families, a government job comes with a quiet fear: “Will we have to pay someone to get it?” In Punjab, one family says that fear never came true. After their son landed a government job, they publicly thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for a process that, in their words, cost them nothing but hard work.

Why This Story Matters

A government job means a steady income, security and respect. Yet for years, many job seekers across India have complained about bribes and recommendations. When a family says they got a job on merit alone, it resonates with millions of ordinary people.

A similar case came from Ferozepur. Tajinder Singh said his family feared they would have to pay a bribe when the job call came, but he got the job without spending a single penny.

What the Government Says

The Punjab government says merit and transparency are the foundation of its recruitment drive. CM Mann said that 69,094 government jobs have been provided so far, with all appointments made on merit, transparency and fairness, without any recommendation or political influence. He has also said the state follows a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, and an Anti-Corruption Action Line was launched on March 23, 2022.

How Merit-Based Hiring Works

In simple terms, merit-based hiring means:

  • Open exams: Candidates apply and compete through written tests and eligibility checks.
  • Clear results: Selection depends on scores and qualifications, not personal contacts.
  • Public appointment letters: Selected candidates receive their letters at official events.

When a process is clear and predictable, there is less room for middlemen to demand money.

Voices of the New Recruits

Several new recruits have praised the process at appointment ceremonies. One doctor said it was his third government job and credited the transparency of the process, while a cooperative inspector said she secured her second job without any bribe or recommendation.

What Job Seekers Can Do

  • Apply only through official government portals and notifications.
  • Never pay anyone who promises a “guaranteed” job.
  • Report bribe demands to the Anti-Corruption Action Line.
