Seven close aides of Amritpal Singh, previously held in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), have been transferred to Punjab on transit remand. The Punjab Police will present them in the Ajnala court on Friday, seeking further custody for investigation into the 2023 attack on Ajnala police station.

Punjab Police Secures Four-Day Remand of Amritpal Singh

Speaking to ANI, DSP Inderjeet Singh confirmed, “We have obtained a four-day remand of the accused, and they will be kept in Amritsar Jail.” The police had initially sought a seven-day remand but were granted four days. The detainees will now be presented before the court on March 25.

Advocate Ritu Raj, representing the detainees, stated that the seven individuals, whose NSA detention period has ended, are now under judicial review. “This includes Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Daljit Singh Kalsi, and five others. The court will decide their custody status, and we will have to wait for further developments,” he said.

Transit from Dibrugarh Jail to Punjab

Before the court proceedings, the Punjab Police secured the legal transfer of the detainees from Dibrugarh Central Jail. The transfer was completed through two separate flights. Three of the accused were flown together, while the remaining four traveled on another aircraft.

Earlier, four detainees—Gurmeet Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Daljit Singh Kalsi, and Basant Singh—were released by Dibrugarh jail authorities. However, Punjab Police re-arrested them immediately, citing fresh charges related to the Ajnala police station case. They were then produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Dibrugarh before being sent to Punjab.

Amritpal Singh and His Aides Under Scrutiny

Amritpal Singh, leader of ‘Waris Punjab De’, was arrested alongside his nine aides in March 2023 under the NSA, following a major police crackdown in Punjab. The authorities feared that their actions could disrupt public order and national security.

Interestingly, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Amritpal Singh contested independently and won the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab. Meanwhile, investigations into the Ajnala police station attack continue, with police officials stating that further questioning of the detainees will take place in the coming days.
