Veer Bal Diwas, observed on 26th December, is one such moment – a solemn reminder of the unimaginable bravery of Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji – the four Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who chose death over the comfort of compromise.
The courage, sacrifice, bravery and faith of the four Sahibzadas are etched forever in the heart of humanity, reminding the world that the path of righteousness often demands the highest price.
The Elder Sahibzadas: Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji
Baba Ajit Singh Ji, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, was only 18 when he demonstrated extraordinary valor at the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib in December 1704. Alongside his 14-year-old younger brother Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, Baba Ajit Singh Ji stood firm against a Mughal army numbering in the thousands.
Outnumbered but unshaken, the two brothers faced their fate with the name of Waheguru on their lips and swords in their hands. Both charged into the battlefield like lions, embodying the spirit of a true sain-soldier. Witnesses to the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib described the valour of the two Sahibzadas as that of lion’s cubs leaping into batle – radiant, fearless and unconditionally devoted to the Khalsa Panth.
The Younger Sahibzadas: Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji
While Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji were thundering in the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib, a quieter but equally profound story unfolded in Sirhind. The younger Sahibzadas – Baba Zorawar Singh Ji, aged 9, and Baba Fateh Singh Ji, just 7 – were captured along with their grandmother, Mata Gujri Ji.
Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor, offered them a choice, either a choice to embrace Islam and live in comfort, or refuse and face execution. The young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji even at their tender age refused to abandon their faith. Their serene defiance even stunned the hardcore Islamic radicals at the court. “We are the sons of Guru Gobind Singh,” they declared. “We shall never betray our Guru and our faith.”
For their powerful stance, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji were sentenced to be bricked alive within a wall – one of the most harrowing, disturbing, shameful and disgusting acts in the history of mankind.
The martyrdom of Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji alongside the passing of Mata Gujri Ji became a symbol of unshakable faith and moral strength.
