Ashok Gehlot: In response to a PIL seeking to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, the Rajasthan High Court has sent him a show-cause notice. This comes after the chief minister of Rajasthan on Thursday clarified that his comment on alleged “corruption in the judiciary” was not representative of his “personal opinion” and walked back the statement.
Protests and PIL Filed Against Gehlot’s Controversial Remark on Judiciary
His explanation came after Jodhpur, Rajasthan, lawyers who were angered by his remark called for a one-day protest and accused Ashok Gehlot of wrongdoing. Shivcharan Gupta, a local lawyer, filed the PIL. Legal action was started by the solicitors to advance Gehlot’s contempt case. After hearing the case on Saturday, a division bench presided over by Justices MM Shrivastava and Ashutosh Kumar sent Gehlot a notice requesting a response within three weeks. On October 3, there will be a hearing on the case.
Ashok Gehlot’s Controversial Judiciary Comment and Subsequent Clarification
On Wednesday, Gehlot told reporters in Jaipur that “corruption is pervasive in the judiciary today. According to what I’ve heard, some solicitors personally render the same judgement in writing. In a later statement, the chief minister said that he has always respected and believed in the judiciary.
