“BJP Using Pulwama Widows To Gain Political Mileage”: Ashok Gehlot

On February 14, 2019, a CRPF contingent was attacked by terrorists in Pulwama, in which 40 soldiers were martyred. Of these, 5 jawans were from Rajasthan. The widows of the three martyrs are sitting on a dharna in Jaipur from February 28 along with Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Kirorilal Meena. They alleges that the assurance given by the ministers who attended the last rites of the martyrs has not been fulfilled till date.

On the other hand, the state government claims that the families of the martyrs have been given full help on the basis of the Kargil package. This includes cash amount of Rs.50 lakh, fixed deposit of Rs.05 lakh to the parents, securing the right of employment for a child of the martyr. To keep the memory of the martyrs everlasting, the school/college has been named after the two martyrs. Now the demands are being raised. They are not appropriate.

CM Gehlot said in a statement, “Some BJP leaders are disrespecting the wives of the martyrs by using them to gain political mileage. This has never been the tradition of Rajasthan. I condemn it.”

Gehlot asked the question by tweeting

A tweet has been made on behalf of CM Gehlot regarding the demand of the widows of Pulwama martyrs. In this tweet, he has raised a question by terming the demand of the widows as unfair. It has been asked through tweet that how can it be justified to kill the rights of the children of martyrs and give job to another relative? What will happen to the children of martyrs when they become adults? Is it right to kill their rights?

The state government claims that according to the Kargil package, cash assistance of Rs 50 lakh has been given to Martyr Jitram Gurjar’s, a resident of Sundarwali in Bharatpur district. 25 lakh rupees were given as immediate assistance and another 25 lakh rupees have been given in lieu of not taking 25 bighas of land. Rs 5 lakh has been deposited in the monthly income scheme in the post office in the name of the martyr’s parents. Veerangana has 2 daughters, one of whom has the right to be given a job as per rules.

Veerangana has been issued a free travel pass in Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation buses. The file was sent in April 2019 itself to name the Government Girls Primary School, Sunderwali, after the martyr, but the school was earlier named after freedom fighter Harish Chandra. In such a situation, the process of renaming the Government College town after the name of the martyr is going on. For the purpose of providing special identity to the widow and giving her due respect, ‘Veerangana Identity Card’ has been issued. The state government says that Veerangana wants to get niyojan to the martyr’s younger brother (brother-in-law), who does not come under the category of dependent under the rules.
