Rajasthan Civic Polls: Rajasthan’s urban local body elections have handed the BJP a clear edge over Congress, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling the outcome proof of the “victory of truth over the echo of falsehood.”

The Numbers

According to results declared on September 14, the BJP won 4,179 wards, ahead of Congress’s 3,613, while independents secured 2,273 wards. The BJP also claimed clear majorities in four of the state’s ten municipal corporations. Figures were compiled as of 7 pm on results day, with outcomes for 10 wards still pending at the time.

A Bigger Electoral Map

The victory comes against the backdrop of a significantly expanded urban map. Rajasthan’s ward count grew by around 37% since the last civic poll cycle held between 2019 and 2021, with 2,770 new wards added, taking the total to 10,244. Even with this larger playing field, the BJP maintained its lead over Congress by 566 wards.

Modi and Shah React

Rajasthan Civic Polls: Taking to X, Modi thanked Rajasthan’s voters, saying the mandate reflected support for the “double-engine” government’s development and governance record, and that it would strengthen the resolve to build a more prosperous state. Home Minister Amit Shah echoed the sentiment, congratulating Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and state BJP leaders, framing the result as public endorsement of the party’s work after what he described as freeing the state from Congress-era governance issues.

With BJP capturing roughly 41% of seats to Congress’s 35%, the result strengthens the party’s organisational footing in Rajasthan ahead of future electoral contests, even as the wider ward expansion means both parties are now contesting a considerably larger and more fragmented urban battlefield than in previous cycles.
