Man with hydrophobia kills elderly woman, eats her flesh; arrested by Rajasthan Police

A 24-year-old man is in jail after reportedly killing an elderly woman in Rajasthan’s Pali district and eating her flesh. The accused was taken into custody by the authorities and checked into a hospital after it was determined that he had hydrophobia. Mumbai resident Surendra Thakur has been named as the accused.

Thakur has been accused with cannibalism in addition to being charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to medical professionals at Bangar Hospital, Surendra Thakur “is suffering from hydrophobia”—a dread of water brought on by a late-stage rabies infection—possibly as a result of being bitten by a “rabid dog” in the past but not receiving the appropriate care.

The event occurred on Friday in Saradhana village, under Sendra police station, according to the police, who cited witnesses. Shanti Devi, 65, the victim, was killed by the accused when she went to feed her livestock, according to the accusers.

“The accused is behaving like a mentally sick patient and in an aggressive manner. We have admitted him to the hospital where his medical examination is going on. Even in the hospital, he created a ruckus, after which he was tied up by the nursing staff on a bed,” Jaitaran Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhram Bishnoi said.

He claimed that the accused had travelled to Sendra from Mumbai via bus, and a bus ticket supported his claim.

Biren Kathat, the son of Shanti Devi, said to the police that he had killed his mother and eaten her flesh.

“I was returning after grazing goats when I saw the man who was eating the flesh of the deceased woman. I got scared and ran from the spot,” witness Kathat said, adding he also saw the blood-stained face of the accused. Initially, locals were frightened after seeing the accused, but when he tried to escape they chased him and caught him and handed him over to the police.

“A patient has been admitted to Bangar Hospital who is suffering from hydrophobia. It is possible that a rabid dog might have bitten him in the past. He might not have got vaccinated and because of this, he developed hydrophobia or rabies,” Dr Praveen said. Meanwhile, the police handed over the body of the woman to the family members after the autopsy.
