Rajasthan: Umesh Mishra, director general of police (DGP) for Rajasthan, made the startling statement on Monday that 41% of rape cases reported in the state are fake. During a news conference held at the headquarters of the Rajasthan Police, DGP Mishra of Rajasthan remarked to media, “It is noteworthy that out of the total cases of rape registered in our state, 41 per cent are found to be false, while at the national level, the percentage of false cases is only 8.”

It is a misunderstanding, according to Mishra, that Rajasthan has the highest rate of rape in India; in reality, Madhya Pradesh has the highest rate and Rajasthan has the second-highest rate. The Rajasthan police, according to him, register each and every instance of this kind of crime, which is why there is such a misunderstanding. It is the failure to file FIRs, not a low level of crime, that accounts for the low number of rape cases in Madhya Pradesh.

He noted that some states begin their investigations of major incidents like rape as complaints rather than registering them as charges. He continued further by saying “Many times the criminals get the benefit of this and there is a danger of destruction of many important pieces of evidence.”

He continued by saying that the police in Rajasthan had received strict orders to file a rape complaint right away. A FIR will be filed if there is a fake case, and individuals who filed the fraudulent complaints will face legal repercussions.

He added, “In the year 2022, there has been a total increase of 68 per cent in the proceedings against those who got false cases filed as compared to the previous year.” He also said, “The national average of pending rape cases is 30 per cent, while in Rajasthan it is only 12 per cent, while the national average in getting punishment is 28 per cent. While in Rajasthan, the rate of getting punishment in such cases is 47.9.”

“There has been success in solving the cases of atrocities against women. In 2018, it used to take 211 days to dispose of these cases whereas now it is being disposed of in 69 days,” he said.

According to DGP Mishra, the police are acting quickly in the POCSO Act case as a consequence of which 12 of these cases have received the death penalty and 466 have received sentences of life in prison or 20 years of hard labour.

DGP Mishra held a press conference on Monday to provide an overview of the activities of the Rajasthan Police in 2022.
