Rajasthan Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme: The Rajasthan government has launched the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme 2024, aimed at providing job opportunities to urban residents across the state. This initiative is modeled after the successful Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and is designed to address unemployment in urban areas by ensuring a minimum number of workdays for eligible individuals.
The scheme guarantees 100 days of employment to each family in the urban areas, focusing on public works like infrastructure development, sanitation, environmental conservation, and community welfare projects. With a budget allocation of ₹800 crore, the government intends to provide a safety net to low-income families struggling with job insecurity, especially in the wake of economic challenges faced by urban workers.
Addressing Urban Unemployment
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot stated that the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme would serve as a key measure to combat unemployment in cities and towns, offering a much-needed source of income for thousands of families. The scheme targets those in need of stable work opportunities, including migrant laborers, daily wage workers, and marginalized sections of society.
“Through this scheme, we are ensuring that no family in urban areas goes without work. It is a significant step toward improving the livelihood of the urban poor,” CM Gehlot remarked.
Key Features of the Scheme
The scheme will provide jobs in a variety of sectors such as public infrastructure projects, waste management, green spaces, and water conservation. It will also emphasize women’s participation, ensuring that at least 50% of the workforce under this scheme will be women. Additionally, the government will focus on providing jobs that enhance skills, ensuring long-term employability for workers in different industries.
To streamline the process, the government is set to establish employment centers in various urban areas, allowing citizens to easily register for work. The scheme is also expected to reduce migration from urban areas by offering sustainable job opportunities closer to home.
Boosting Economic Recovery Post-Pandemic
The Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme 2024 comes at a time when Rajasthan, like many states, is dealing with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to widespread job losses in urban sectors. By offering stable work and ensuring income security, this scheme aims to bolster the state’s economic recovery and ensure that urban dwellers, particularly those from lower-income groups, have access to reliable employment.
This initiative, hailed as a visionary step by the state government, is expected to not only provide economic relief but also strengthen urban infrastructure, improve public services, and contribute to sustainable urban development.
