Rare tornado occurrence in Punjab! Fourth since 2007, causes damage and injuries

Punjab: Climate scientists have taken notice of the recent tornado in the Bukainwala hamlet of the Fazilka district, close to the Pakistani border. A number of locals recorded the tornado on their smartphones, which damaged numerous homes and injured numerous people and animals. Luckily, no fatalities were reported because the strong winds quickly shifted to the Pakistani side. Let’s examine the definition of a tornado and its frequency in Northwest India.

15 tornadoes were reported in Northwest India and Pakistan

From June 1903 to March 2011, a total of 15 tornadoes were reported in Northwest India and Pakistan, according to a study titled “Climatology of Tornadoes over Northwest India and Pakistan” that can be seen on the IMD department’s website. 12 of them have the precise dates of the occurrence documented. Eight of the twelve happened during the pre-monsoon season, which runs from March through June. According to this study, the worst tornado ever recorded in North India struck New Delhi on March 17, 1978, killing 28 people and injuring nearly 700 more.

Tornados Since 2007

On August 15, 2007, a tornado that had harmed standing crops, destroyed trees, and blown off a tube well’s roof was spotted in the Sahnewal neighbourhood of Ludhiana, close to the Sahnewal airport. A peasant also captured it on his mobile phone. Then, in July 2010, it was noted in the Fatehabad region. A few days later, on August 13, 2010, it was noted there once more. Just the standing crops were damaged in both cases. It was reported in the Pakistani city of Sialkot on March 19, 2011.

March 2015 Tornado

A tornado was reportedly seen between Jalandhar and Nakodar in March 2015, and it struck the Ferozepur village of Zira in mid-February 2018. There were no fatalities in either incident, but there was some property damage to buildings and crops.
