The Supreme Court has made an important decision in the ongoing case about SSC teacher appointments in West Bengal. The court cancelled part of the Calcutta High Court's order that had asked the CBI to investigate the West Bengal cabinet’s move to create supernumerary posts (extra teaching jobs). However, the Supreme Court said the CBI can still continue its investigation into the rest of the SSC case.Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, strongly reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision. She has called the move a “conspiracy” against the state and its teachers.

SSC Teachers Recruitment: What’s the Issue?

The case goes back to a 2016 recruitment drive by the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC). The Calcutta High Court later found major irregularities in the recruitment process and cancelled the teacher appointments. The Supreme Court also supported that decision, which led to the cancellation of over 25,000 SSC teacher appointments. This move caused a storm in West Bengal, as many of the affected teachers had been working for several years. It has created anger and confusion among thousands of families.

Mamata Banerjee’s Strong Response

Mamata Banerjee has taken a firm stand on the issue. She said the Supreme Court’s decision is part of a political conspiracy to ruin the state’s education system. After meeting with many of the affected SSC teachers, Mamata Banerjee said:“There is a conspiracy going on to destroy West Bengal’s education system. Many of these teachers are gold medallists, and now they are being called thieves and unfit. Who gave you that right?”Mamata Banerjee added that cancelling the supernumerary SSC teacher posts is unfair, and said that the central agencies are being used to target Bengal for political reasons.

What’s Next in the Case?

The Supreme Court has stopped the CBI from investigating how the supernumerary posts were created, but it has allowed the CBI’s probe into the rest of the SSC recruitment case to continue. This means the cancellation of over 25,000 SSC teacher jobs still stands — unless a new court order changes the decision. This case has brought national attention to the roles of the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court, CBI, and the West Bengal government. Mamata Banerjee continues to defend the affected teachers and says the fight will go on.
