Parkash Singh Badal: The Centre announced two days of state mourning following the demise of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on April 25. The state mourning has been announced as a mark of respect for the Punjab strongman and five-time Chief Minister who straddled state politics and will be observed across India as a mark of respect to the veteran politician.
The two-day state mourning will be observed from April 26 to 27. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast and there will be no official entertainment, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a communication to all states.
Not keeping well
According to reports, the grand old patriarch of Punjab politics was not keeping well for the past few years. He was earlier hospitalised in June last year due to complaints related to gastritis and bronchial asthma.
Badal, who was 95, was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali over a week ago after he complained of uneasiness in breathing.”Mr Badal passed away at around 8 pm,” hospital director Abhijeet Singh told reporters over the phone.
The Fortis Hospital in its bulletin issued on Tuesday evening said, “Despite appropriate medical management S Parkash Singh Badal succumbed to his illness. Fortis Hospital Mohali deeply condoles the death of S Parkash Singh Badal.”
Last Rites at Badal village
His last rites will take place Thursday afternoon at his native village Badal in Lambi in Muktsar, a party leader said.
Mr Badal who was the architect behind the formation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had forged an alliance with the NDA and presided over Punjab’s destiny as Chief Minister till 2017.
