Uttarakhand News: Tragic Landslide Claims Lives at Temple Base Camp, 3 Dead 17 Missing

Uttarakhand News: Three people were killed in a landslip that occurred at the base camp of a famed Hindu temple in the Indian state of Uttarakhand as a result of torrential rainfall, officials said on Saturday. According to Nandan Singh Rajwar, a prominent representative of the area’s Disaster Management unit, at least 17 further people have been reported missing from the village of Gaurikund in the state of Uttarakhand. Two families’ members and a few pilgrims were among the unaccounted for, he claimed.

Landslip Claims Lives and Leaves Pilgrims Missing at Uttarakhand’s Gaurikund Base Camp

On Thursday night, a section of a slope caved in as a result of excessive rain, prompting reports of landslides. Roadside restaurants and shops that had been carried away by the Mandakini River’s rapid flow were struck by enormous rocks. The area was experiencing severe rains, according to Rajwar, which hindered search efforts. Rescue workers began their search on Saturday. Only three bodies could be found up until Friday evening, according to Rajwar, who noted that rescue efforts had been put on hold because of the deluge of rain and poor visibility. Numerous devoted pilgrims have traditionally used Gaurikund, located in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, as their starting point as they travel spiritually to the famed Kedarnath temple, one of the holiest places for Hindus. Both visitors and followers of many religions travel from all over the world to visit the picturesque area.

Pilgrims Continue Spiritual Journey Amid Downpours in Uttarakhand

Even though there have been frequent downpours in the area since Wednesday, pilgrims have been moving forward in their spiritual quest. This year, the temple has welcomed over 1 million pilgrims, and the pilgrimage is expected to last until mid-November. In the same region as the deadly flash flood in 2013 that destroyed the temple village of Kedarnath and some homes built close to the pilgrimage path, over 6,000 people perished or went missing.
