In a major boost to travel and tourism in the region, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed a 26-kilometre elevated road that will directly connect the upcoming Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to the picturesque hill station of Mussoorie.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious stretch is in its final stages and is expected to be ready soon. Once completed, the elevated road will significantly cut travel time, ease traffic congestion, and ensure a smoother and safer journey to Mussoorie, one of North India’s most visited tourist destinations.

What It Means for Travelers

Currently, travelers heading to Mussoorie from Delhi face heavy traffic through Dehradun, especially during peak tourist seasons. The new elevated road aims to bypass crowded zones, providing direct, seamless access from the expressway to the hills — saving both time and fuel.

Officials say the project is designed to blend speed with sustainability, ensuring minimal ecological disruption while opening up economic opportunities for locals through improved connectivity.

Officials have indicated that special care will be taken to minimize ecological disturbance, given the sensitivity of the Himalayan region. Advanced engineering solutions are expected to ensure stability and safety while preserving forest cover and biodiversity. Environmental clearances and local stakeholder consultations are expected to be key parts of the approval process.

With the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway already promising to reduce the travel time from Delhi to Dehradun to just 2.5 hours, the addition of the Mussoorie extension will place Dehradun as a central node for accessing hill towns across Garhwal region. The state government also plans to integrate this project with upcoming logistics, transport, and tourism corridors under the Gati Shakti scheme.

Expressway to Hill Getaway

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, already under rapid development, is being seen as a game-changer in regional infrastructure. With this 26-km extension, a trip from Ghaziabad to Mussoorie could soon be a single smooth ride, enhancing weekend tourism and promoting eco-friendly, high-speed road travel.

This move aligns with the Centre’s vision to develop all-weather, high-speed transport corridors connecting major cities to tourist hotspots, especially in the Himalayan region
