The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts in Uttarakhand as monsoon showers intensify across the state. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected over the coming days, raising concerns about landslides and flooding in hilly regions.
According to officials, Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Tehri are likely to witness intermittent to heavy rainfall between June 25 and July 1, with increased risk in vulnerable slopes and low-lying areas.
The IMD has warned of winds reaching 40–50 km/h, lightning, and reduced visibility in the hills. Travelers have been advised to postpone non-essential trips, particularly along landslide-prone routes such as the Almora-Haldwani highway, where debris has already disrupted movement.
“There is a high probability of road blockages due to landslides. Local teams are on alert, and disaster management authorities have been asked to remain fully prepared,” said a senior IMD official in Dehradun.
Despite annual warnings, drainage and slope-stabilisation work remain inadequate in many districts. Residents in areas like Nainital and Mussoorie have raised concerns over clogged drains, overflowing water channels, and a lack of coordinated early-warning systems.
A recent Times of India report highlighted that despite state claims, monsoon preparedness is far from adequate, with residents reporting recurring waterlogging, poorly maintained roads, and no clear SOP for local evacuations.
Relief & Response Measures Underway
To prevent casualties, district administrations have begun stockpiling essential supplies, activating helplines, and mobilising disaster response teams (SDRF). Shelter homes are being prepared in high-risk zones, while tourism departments have issued advisories for safe trekking and travel.
Additionally, as part of the ‘Aapda Sakhi’ initiative, trained community women volunteers are being deployed in remote villages to assist in early warnings and evacuations.
June 25-26: Morning rain, possible thunderstorms
June 27-29: Periods of heavy showers with high humidity
June 30–July 1: Cloudy with thunderstorms expected in several regions
The IMD has predicted above-average rainfall for Uttarakhand this monsoon season, which while beneficial for agriculture, may also increase the likelihood of flash floods and hill erosion.
