The people of Uttarakhand will now have to pay more for electricity, as the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved a 5.62% hike in power tariffs across the state. The new rates came into effect on April 1, 2025, and are expected to impact both urban and rural households significantly.
Commission Rejects UPCL's Proposal for Steep Hike
Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) had proposed a 12.01% increase in power tariffs. However, the commission has only allowed a marginal 0.12% increase from UPCL’s side. The major burden of the 5.62% hike has come due to the Power Distribution Factor (PDF) adjustments from UJVN Ltd., contributing nearly 5.5% to the tariff increase.
Tough Stance Against Power Theft
The commission has expressed serious concern over widespread electricity theft in various regions of the state. It has ordered an audit of divisions and sub-divisions with high theft rates. Further, it has mandated that UPCL maintain transparency and accountability in the execution and costs of various power schemes.
To curb power losses, the Electricity Regulatory Commission has also asked UPCL to ensure its vigilance team takes an active role in identifying and addressing theft. An action plan has been demanded for rural and urban areas affected by illegal power usage.
Accountability of Officials Under Scrutiny
The commission emphasized the need to hold underperforming officials and complacent officers accountable. Targets must be met, and those failing to do so will face consequences. The aim is to bring efficiency and discipline to the state’s power sector.
Relief for Consumers: No Additional Security Charges
In a major relief for consumers, the commission has directed that no additional security charges will be levied for smart meters. UPCL had earlier increased these charges, drawing widespread public criticism. The regulatory body has now ordered an immediate halt to the collection of any such fees.
This move is expected to ease the financial burden on households already dealing with inflation and rising utility costs.
As Uttarakhand continues to modernize its power infrastructure, the focus remains on transparency, accountability, and consumer welfare—even as the state grapples with increasing operational expenses and electricity theft challenges.
