The Uttarakhand government is taking steps to alleviate the strain on its key hill towns caused by the influx of tourists. To address this, the government is in the process of establishing two new tourist destinations, one in Kumaon and the other in Garhwal. The state's Tourism Minister, Satpal Maharaj, noted that the number of tourists visiting Uttarakhand has surpassed five crores in recent years, and a substantial increase is expected this year.

The government is pursuing the development of new destinations

Recognizing the need to enhance infrastructure to accommodate this growing tourism, the government is pursuing the development of new destinations while also improving facilities at less popular ones.

In an effort to draw more visitors to Kumaon, where tourism has been comparatively lower, the government has initiated the Manaskhand Mala Mission. This project aims to create a well-connected road network that links 16 major temples, including Jageshwar Dham and Kainchi Dham, forming a religious circuit.

The projected tourism figures for Uttarakhand are significant, with an estimated seven crore tourists expected to visit the state in 2023. Furthermore, this number is anticipated to exceed 10 crores in the coming years. Additionally, the state expects an increase in Char Dham pilgrims, surpassing 50 lakhs, and the Kanwar yatras have already crossed the four-crore mark.

In parallel with these tourism initiatives, the government is also focusing on enhancing visitor support and safety. To this end, they are training 100 police officers as tourist police, who will be stationed at key tourist locations to provide assistance to visitors and address their inquiries. This comprehensive approach aims to not only promote tourism but also ensure a positive and safe experience for all visitors to Uttarakhand.
