Uttarakhand News— In a significant move that honors local heritage and public sentiment, Joshimath has officially been renamed Jyotirmath. The decision comes after a longstanding demand from the local populace and was recently approved by the Government of India.

Joshimath Renamed Jyotirmath Following Longstanding Local Demand

The push to rename Joshimath to Jyotirmath was brought to the forefront during a meeting with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the name Jyotirmath, CM Dhami took the matter seriously and initiated the proposal for the name change. Following his announcement, the proposal was sent to the central government, which has now given its approval.

The decision has been met with widespread approval from the local community. Residents have long believed that the area holds historical and spiritual significance, dating back to the 8th century when Adi Guru Shankaracharya is said to have performed penance under the Amar Kalpa tree in this region. It is believed that through his penance, Shankaracharya attained divine knowledge and enlightenment, leading to the area being named Jyotirmath. Over time, however, it became more commonly known as Joshimath.

The renaming of Joshimath to Jyotirmath is seen as a way to preserve and honor the area's rich historical and spiritual legacy. Chief Minister Dhami’s decision to respect and implement this change reflects his administration's commitment to acknowledging and valuing local sentiments and cultural heritage.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Uttarakhand stated that this move is in respect of the public’s sentiments and the historical significance of the name Jyotirmath. The renaming of the tehsil is a step towards preserving the legacy of Adi Guru Shankaracharya and the divine knowledge he is believed to have gained in this sacred region.
