Uttarakhand News: State Set to Implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Soon, Announces CM Dhami

Uttarakhand news

Uttarakhand News: Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced on Thursday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be put into effect in the state as soon as the UCC draft is prepared. He expressed confidence that Uttarakhand would become a prominent model for the entire country in the successful implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

What did CM Dhami say?

Article 44 of the Indian Constitution calls for the endeavour to establish a UCC covering marriage, inheritance, adoption, and related legal matters with uniform laws across the nation. CM Dhami said, “It is our resolution to bring the Uniform Civil Code as soon as possible. When we get the UCC draft, we will take this process forward this year. We will move ahead to implement it.”

Continuing further, he said, “We were re-elected with a massive mandate breaking the convention of incumbent governments losing the polls. After forming the government we set up a committee to draft the UCC.”

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vigorously advocated for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during a recent public meeting, numerous Opposition leaders have voiced their opposition to this proposed legislation. The 22nd Law Commission of India scrutinised the subject matter of the proposed UCC in response to a reference from the Ministry of Law and Justice dated June 17, 2016.

UCC Bill under way

He mentioned that the government has already drafted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). It’s worth noting that the Dhami government established a committee in March 2022 to formulate the UCC, which actively sought input and recommendations from the general public during its proceedings.
