According to the Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act, 2020, the Meerut division of claims tribunal has ordered 10 men who are accused of “damaging” public property during a violent protest against the Agnipath scheme’s launch earlier this year to pay an aggregate compensation of Rs 1,04,620. This was confirmed on Saturday by Chandra Prakash Mani Tripathi, joint director (prosecution, Meerut).

Aged under 30, each alleged protester comes from a different hamlet in the Aligarh district. Tripathi stated that the claims panel delivered its ruling on December 22 after hearing from both parties. He added that a copy of the order has been forwarded to Aligarh District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh for retrieval.
Sub-inspector Ranjit Kumar claimed before the tribunal that during protests against the Agnipath project near Somana toll plaza under Gabhana police station area in Aligarh on June 16, 2022, ten people damaged three buses, including one each of the Etah, Mainpuri, and Khurja depots of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation.

A similar decision was recently issued against 86 people accused of damaging public property during protests in Amroha three years ago against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and it follows the tribunal’s directive in the “Agniveer” case. They have been told to pay a total of Rs. 4,27,439 in compensation.
