CM Yogi Adityanath: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has completed 12 years since its launch, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has counted it among the flagship achievements he regularly credits to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare agenda, calling it central to the country’s financial inclusion story.

A Milestone in Numbers

According to the Finance Ministry, the scheme now covers 59.09 crore accounts with total deposits touching Rs 3.17 lakh crore as of mid-August 2026. The average deposit per account has grown 3.4 times over 12 years to Rs 5,356, reflecting a steady shift toward formal savings among first-time account holders.

Reaching Women and Rural India

The scheme’s design has consistently prioritised underserved groups. Ministry data shows 55.7 per cent of PMJDY accounts, or 32.92 crore, are held by women, while 77.8 per cent of accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas. Alongside basic banking access, 41.29 crore RuPay cards have been issued to account holders, extending accident insurance cover along with everyday banking convenience.

CM Yogi’s Consistent Endorsement

Adityanath has repeatedly held up Jan Dhan Yojana as proof of the Centre’s welfare focus, previously stating that schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana expanded access to banking services alongside initiatives like Ujjwala Yojana and the Jal Jeevan Mission. He has also credited direct benefit transfer mechanisms with strengthening transparency and ensuring welfare reaches intended beneficiaries efficiently.

A Pillar of Financial Inclusion

CM Yogi Adityanath: Officials describe the Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile trinity as a diversion-proof mechanism for direct delivery of financial assistance, eliminating middlemen in welfare disbursal. Twelve years on, the scheme remains a reference point for leaders like Yogi Adityanath in framing the Centre’s broader financial inclusion legacy.
