Tensions escalated at Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) on Sunday evening following a clash between students and police, sparked by an alleged incident of body-shaming by a police officer. The confrontation, which occurred near the campus temple during Navaratri celebrations, has drawn widespread criticism from students and the university administration.
Alleged Insult Sparks Confrontation
According to student accounts, Sub-Inspector Satish Chaudhary allegedly called Harsh Veer Chaudhary, a fourth-year BTech student, “mota” (fat) while asking a group of students to stop loitering outside the temple. The comment led to a heated exchange.
“We were walking away when he made the remark. I confronted him, and he threatened to teach me a lesson,” said Harsh, who has since filed complaints with both university authorities and the Chief Minister’s helpline.
Clash Caught on Camera, Police Deny Misconduct
Shortly after the argument, the officer reportedly called for reinforcements. A video clip that surfaced on social media appears to show police using batons and abusive language while dispersing the students. Harsh was briefly detained and later released after university officials intervened.
Medical police station SHO Sheelesh Yadav denied any misconduct, stating,
“They weren’t arrested, just counselled and let go. The students became argumentative when asked to disperse.”
University Condemns Police Behaviour
The CCSU administration issued a strong statement following the incident. Chief Proctor Professor Beer Pal said:
“Police shouldn’t behave like this inside the university campus. We’ve asked them to identify the real miscreants, but no innocent student should be harassed.”
An internal inquiry has been initiated, and the university has demanded a formal explanation from local law enforcement.
Female Students Raise Campus Safety Concerns
The incident also reignited conversations about female safety on campus. Several female students expressed discomfort over regular harassment near the temple and hostel areas, stating that confrontations—both with outsiders and police—are common.
“These students often stare at us or pass inappropriate comments. We feel unsafe even stepping out of the hostel,” said a BBA student, requesting anonymity.
Frequent police patrols in the area, meant to enhance security, are now being questioned due to how often they escalate into disputes.
Navaratri Festivities Marred by Incident
Sunday marked the final day of Navaratri, a time when student gatherings around the campus temple are customary. Witnesses said the environment was initially festive, with students from various disciplines, including engineering and commerce, present peacefully until the situation turned tense.
