Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has issued a strong public advisory warning citizens against rising cybercrime and online fraud, particularly scams involving the false concept of a so-called “digital arrest.” In a message addressed to the people of the state, the Chief Minister clarified that no law in India recognises digital arrest, and such claims are being used by cybercriminals to intimidate and cheat innocent citizens.

CM Yogi Adityanath said that while mobile phones and computers have made life easier and more efficient, they have also increased the risks of cyber fraud. He emphasised that the Uttar Pradesh government is taking continuous and concrete steps to curb cybercrime and strengthen digital safety across the state.

Calls for Greater Online Awareness in Uttar Pradesh

Highlighting the government’s efforts, the Chief Minister said that before 2017, Uttar Pradesh had only two cybercrime police stations, whereas today all 75 districts have fully functional cybercrime police stations, along with cyber help desks in every police station. He stressed that awareness and vigilance are the strongest weapons against cyber fraudsters.

CM Yogi Adityanath cautioned that cybercriminals often misuse terms like “digital arrest” and falsely pose as police or government officials through video calls, WhatsApp or social media, demanding money. He clearly stated that no police or government agency arrests people online or asks for money digitally.

The Chief Minister also urged people to be careful while using social media, warning that publicly shared photos, videos and location details can be misused by criminals. He advised citizens never to share personal information or OTPs with anyone. In case of cyber fraud, he appealed to people to immediately report the incident on the national cybercrime helpline number 1930, noting that quicker reporting increases the chances of recovery.

Calling for collective responsibility, CM Yogi Adityanath urged citizens to spread awareness, especially among senior citizens, and work together to build a safe, secure and cybercrime-free Uttar Pradesh.
