CM Yogi Adityanath: Healthy drinking water is an important factor in enhancing the standard of living within rural communities In Uttar Pradesh, which is led by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, efforts are being made to broaden the provision of tap water to each family within the state under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to supply pure drinking water to the households of the state. Jal Jeevan Mission or Har Ghar Jal Mission was launched by the Central Government in August 2019 for the provision of drinking water to all rural households. The Mission envisions universal coverage of water connections to all households.

Jal Jeevan Mission Reports Progress in Uttar Pradesh

Since the Jal Jeevan Mission was launched, the rural tap water connections have grown substantially in the state. The official data from the Ministry of Jal Shakti on 18 July 2026 shows that in Uttar Pradesh, around 2.45 crore rural households had tap water connections, which is roughly 91.75% of total rural households in the state (2.67 crore). The rise can be considered significant as compared to August 2019 when only about 5.16 lakh rural households, accounting for 1.93% of the total, had tap water connections. So far, close to 2.40 crore additional rural households have been given tap water connections under the programme. These developments also indicate the completion of rural drinking water projects in different regions of the state.

How Jal Jeevan Mission Is Enhancing Water Access in Villages?

“The focus is on a functional household tap connection and not a piped water supply. Jal Jeevan Mission intends to provide 55 litres of water per person per day to rural households.” The scheme has the potential to reduce the burden of collecting drinking water for households that historically have relied on handpumps, wells and water from faraway places. Household taps can further cut back on the time women and children spend collecting drinking water.

Prioritize Sustainable Drinking Water Systems

Providing more household tap connections is just one step to increasing access to drinking water in rural areas. Upkeep of water sources, pipes and supply systems must also be undertaken to ensure that households continue to access water. In March 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the extension of Jal Jeevan Mission till December 2028, with increase in the financial outlay for the programme from ₹3.60 lakh crore to ₹8.69 lakh crore.

The new mission also underscores the importance of safe and sufficient water supply services, infrastructure, and people’s participation. Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees will continue to manage and monitor local drinking water services.

What This Means for Rural Families in Uttar Pradesh

CM Yogi Adityanath: Realistic ways that access to water at home can change your everyday rural living. With increased access to household tap water, your daily routine will be less focused on fetching water, and your family will have easier access to drinking water for household tasks. Also, the proper supply of water enables to better manage hygiene and sanitation, especially in villages where supply of potable water has been irregular. But the job is not done. Ongoing work and investments are necessary to maintain full coverage. Continuing with the regular supply of water, maintaining connections, and water quality monitoring are essential to providing safe drinking water.
