Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday hailed UNESCO’s decision to inscribe Deepavali on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List, calling it a proud recognition of India’s timeless cultural values. He said the festival, celebrated globally as the triumph of light over darkness, has now received the international honour it truly deserves.

Sharing his reaction on X, the Chief Minister highlighted that the recognition holds special significance for Uttar Pradesh, as Ayodhya, the holy birthplace of Prabhu Shri Ram, is believed to be the land where Deepavali was first celebrated upon the return of Lord Ram after 14 years of exile.

Officials in Uttar Pradesh said the recognition strengthens the state’s cultural identity at the global stage. With Ayodhya emerging as a major spiritual destination after the inauguration of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple, this acknowledgment is expected to further boost tourism, cultural exchange, and international interest in India’s traditional festivals. Cultural scholars noted that Deepavali’s inclusion reflects the timeless values of hope, righteousness, and community harmony.

Boost to Cultural Diplomacy

Experts believe this milestone will enhance India’s cultural diplomacy efforts, as festivals like Deepavali are celebrated by millions across the world. The UNESCO listing places emphasis on India’s contribution to global heritage, especially at a time when cultural traditions are being recognized for promoting peace and collective identity. The Ministry of Culture is expected to launch special outreach programs highlighting the rituals, craftsmanship, and narratives associated with the festival.

Ayodhya’s Growing Global Visibility

Ayodhya, which has undergone rapid development in recent years, is likely to attract even more international visitors. Tourism officials say the UNESCO inscription will create new opportunities for documenting and showcasing traditional practices such as diya-making, festive processions, and Ramayana-linked performances. Local artisans in the region are optimistic that this global acknowledgment will improve livelihoods and generate sustainable cultural tourism.

Yogi Adityanath added that this global acknowledgment reflects India’s rising cultural stature under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expressed hope that Ayodhya’s eternal light will continue to inspire humanity, guiding people towards truth, harmony, and new beginnings.

UNESCO earlier announced Deepavali’s inscription on the Intangible Heritage List, marking a historic moment for India’s cultural diplomacy and traditional celebrations.
