Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023: Act of Gallantry and Valour! Meerut brave hearts who laid down their lives, report

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023:Meerut city is famously known for its sports industries and 1847 revolt for Independence. But on this auspicious event of Kargil Vijay Diwas, we tend to remember the ones who selflessly sacrificed their lives in the line of duty protecting their motherland from the infiltrators during the 1999 Kargil War. Few such heroes came from the heartlands of Meerut.

Major Manoj Talwar

Major Manoj Tawar was born in Meerut on 29, August 1969. Major Manoj Talwar, third generation officer, was serving for the 9 Mahar Regiment under the command of 8 Mountain Division and 3 Infantry Division during the Kargil war. On 13 June 1999, under the order of division was patrolling the areas of Zojila Pass along the LOC have reputation for its notorious weather conditions. When his team came under fire from the Pakistani infiltrators and heavy artillery, Major Manoj Talwar showed exceptional gallantry and valor and despite being seriously wounded led his team to retaliate the attack. Unfortunately, he gives to his wounds and was martyred.

Hawaldar Yashwir Singh Tomar, VrC  

Veerta Chakra recipient Hawaldar Yahwir Singh Tomar from 2 Rajputana Rifles, Charlie Company was born in a village near the Bhagpat area of Meerut. Hawaldar Yashwir Singh was serving with 18 Grenadiers along the ‘Tololing Top’ near Drass Sector. Tololing Top is a barren hill with less to no cover and steep tracks all the way to the height of 16000 feet above the sea level with infiltrators dug in deep in their bunkers on top. The final battle for Tololing Top commenced on 12/13 June 1999, with 2 Raj Rifles leading the assault. Infiltrators started their counter offensive with heavy machine guns holding position in many of the natural caves of Tololing top. At around midnight Hawaldar Yashwir Singh went on his own mission and lobbed 18 grenades into the enemy bunkers, destroying the last of the remaining. Yashwir Singh was found with a rifle in one hand and grenade in other, he passed of his wounds in such heroic assault.

Sepoy Jubair Ahmed

Another hero from Meerut, Sepoy Jubair Ahmed showed exceptional bravery and valour in the 1999 Kargil War. Jubair Ahmed was appointed as ‘sepoy’ in 22 Grenadiers and was part of recapturing of Tiger Hill. As the assault for Tiger hill started, in mere few hours Indian Army started to take heavy casualties watching his comrade fall. In such dire situation, Sepoy Jubair took it upon himself and lobbed himself into an enemy bunker killing the infiltrators. Even though Sepoy Jubair was shredded by the enemy, he kept on fighting. Later he succumbed to his wounds and was martyred. He was shot 40 times.  

Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav

Paramveer Charkra recipent Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav was born in a Bulandshehr District, Uttar Pradesh. Subedar Yadav enlisted in army with 18 grenadiers, and was part of Operation Vijay and prominent person in the capture of Tiger Hill. Subedar Yadav was also part the ‘Ghatak’ Platoon. They were tasked to recapture three major strategically important bunkers on Tiger Hill. Bunkers were situated all above the Tiger Hill top, a snow covered with 90 degree steep cliff. Subedar Yadav selflessly volunteered to lead for this mission. With great difficulties Yadav’s team manage to get to the top where they engaged in fierce hand-to-hand. He was gravely wounded yet survived all those 12 bullets.
