Lucknow University to revamp planetarium to promote astronomy education

Lucknow University is preparing to restart its Planetarium which has been closed for a long time. The university administration has applied for funds from the institutions of the country for this. Once the planetarium is built, the students of Lucknow University and Degree College will now be able to get information about celestial events by watching the planetarium. The Planetarium was built in 1949 to promote the astronomy education of the university.

AN Singh introduced Astronomy as a full-fledged subject in B.Sc degree for the first time in India. After this the Planetarium was built. Lucknow University is preparing a proposal to upgrade this. Along with this, a new Planetarium projector machine will also be installed with the help of a company from Gorakhpur. In this regard, the Vice-Chancellor informed that a plan has been made to renovate the Planetarium with the aim of providing a sensitive experience to the students interested in astronomy. Through the renovated facility, students will get a chance to see constellations, learn about seasonal sky patterns and get information about celestial events through projection.

LU students have become scientists

Astronomy students of Lucknow University are working on high positions in the country and abroad. One of these students Dr. Nishant Singh is currently posted as Assistant Professor in IUCAA. At the same time, Dr. SP Ojha and Dr. Mohammad Hasan have become famous as scientists in the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Dr. Shashir Sangyan is working at Tartu Observatory in Estonia. Apart from this, he is associated with the discovery of Saraswati Supercluster. While Dr. Avinash Chaturvedi is working in high level research in Germany. All these alumni are witnesses of advanced education. Which is provided to the students in the program of Astronomy of Lucknow University.

Planetarium was built in 1949

The Planetarium of Lucknow University has an important place in the history of Indian astronomy. The construction of this pioneering Planetarium was completed in 1949 to promote the teaching of astronomy. The size of the dome of the Planetarium is 8 meters and it has a seating capacity of 96 persons. Dr. Alka Mishra, Faculty, Department of Astronomy said that the Planetarium will serve as a central point for the students to discover the wonders of the universe.
