In a major infrastructure push, a 61-kilometre railway line has been proposed to connect Chola in Bulandshahr with Rundhi in Palwal, significantly enhancing connectivity to the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar. The railway corridor is expected to link the airport to major national railway routes heading towards Howrah, Chennai, and Mumbai, thus offering a seamless transit experience for passengers from multiple regions.

The railway corridor is expected to link the airport

The rail line, initially designed to enter the core airport area via an 11km underground channel connected to the Ground Transportation Centre (GTC), may now see a realignment. Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL) has raised concerns that extensive tunnelling could be both prohibitively expensive and geologically infeasible due to local soil conditions.

Instead, officials are now considering aligning the tracks near the upcoming Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) and aviation hubs, which are part of the second phase of airport development. This revised route could lead to the construction of a dedicated railway station in the vicinity, making rail access more efficient without compromising airport expansion plans.

The GTC, planned on 20 acres between the airport’s two terminals in the third phase, is envisioned as a central node integrating metro, buses, rapid rail, and pod taxis. It will ensure passengers can access urban transport modes without stepping out of the terminal premises once the airport reaches an annual capacity of 30 million passengers.

NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh confirmed that the previous underground tunnel alignment for rail movement in both directions could interfere with long-term airport expansion. In response, the airport concessionaire, Yamuna International Airport Private Ltd (YIAPL), proposed in a September meeting to shift the alignment along the boundary of the MRO and aviation hubs, avoiding technical obstacles.

Districts That Stand to Benefit:

The new railway line is expected to significantly boost accessibility for districts like Chola, Bulandshahr, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Improved rail links will not only facilitate passenger movement but also enhance logistics and business opportunities, especially in areas surrounding the airport.

This project reflects the integrated approach to infrastructure being adopted at Jewar, ensuring the Noida International Airport becomes a truly multimodal transport hub connecting air, road, and now rail.
