The election results in Uttar Pradesh have been a mixed bag for the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, with the BJP bagging triumphs in more constituencies, but Akhilesh Yadav’s party making an important breakthrough in Varanasi in the Prime Minister’s own parliamentary constituency. The MLC elections come ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in the state and both the BJP and the SP would be eager to make gains in the polls.

Varanasi results add pressure on BJP

Varanasi was among the most intensely monitored seats in the MLC polls. The Samajwadi Party was victorious in the Varanasi Teachers’ seat in Varanasi with Lal Bihari Yadav defeating the BJP candidate, Pramod Kumar Mishra. The SP had also approached a landslide triumph in the Varanasi Graduates’ seat, as indicated by coverage revealed on October 28. The party’s success in the locale is relevant in light of the fact that the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat is held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the BJP, the findings suggest the need to analyze political developments at a level below the state, instead of measuring its position in the broader electoral map. For the SP, the Varanasi results might be used to emphasize its electoral strength among certain sections of voters.

BJP’s Western Uttar Pradesh Performance Strengthens Its Position

In Western Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s Dinesh Kumar Goyal and Shrichand Sharma won the Meerut Teachers’ and the Meerut Graduates’ constituencies, respectively. The party also managed to hold onto the Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ seat, with Hari Singh Dhillon emerging victorious and won the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency by Umesh Dwivedi. The results bolstered the BJP’s hold in the MLC polls, though there was also the demonstration of its ability to hold support from multiple areas in the election. But the SP’s wins and leads elsewhere show it was not a one-sided contest for either party.

Gorakhpur-Faizabad contest adds to the political uncertainty

Another noteworthy election was for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency. In the contest, BJP’s Dhruv Kumar Tripathi lost to Rajiv Yadav of the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh (Ekjut) and SP’s Sanjayan Tripathi. Initial numbers revealed a neck-and-neck battle between the BJP nominee and Rajiv Yadav. The tight margin of victory led to focus on the constituency, where the SP-backed nominee had also been in the fray. The Samajwadi Party accused the university of irregularities during counting and declared a boycott in Gorakhpur. This is an accusation, and it is separate from election results declared on the record. The declared result and any orders issued by the Election Commission are relevant for determining the result.

What the results mean for Akhilesh Yadav’s SP?

MLC elections also enable both parties to test their organizational strength among graduates and teachers, who elect Legislative Council candidates from separate constituencies. Akhilesh Yadav can take some comfort from the SP’s results in Varanasi and elsewhere. But the victories of the BJP in Meerut, Bareilly–Moradabad, and Lucknow highlight the difficulties facing the opposition in the pockets where the ruling party managed to hold on. These projections aren’t the likely outcome of the 2027 Assembly elections. The constituencies of members of the legislature (MLCs) have a different electorate than Assembly constituencies, and voters for constituencies may be influenced by different issues from the electorate writ large.

Why the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections Matter?

The next Assembly elections will be a much wider indication of who will get the votes across UP. The BJP will try to build on its organizational strength and the recent success in the MLC elections, and the SP will try to increase beyond the seats it bagged. There may be a political lesson from the results in teachers’ and graduates’ seats, but people’s behavior on election day will be broader.
