UP MLC Election Results; The Samajwadi Party (SP) has won five of the 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, including both Varanasi seats. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the other six.

Where The SP Won

The SP won the following constituencies:

  • Varanasi Teachers’
  • Varanasi Graduates’
  • Agra Teachers’
  • Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’
  • Lucknow Graduates’

Sitting MLC Lal Bihari Yadav retained the Varanasi Teachers’ seat, beating BJP candidate Pramod Mishra by about 4,900 votes, ETV Bharat reports. Mansingh Yadav won in Allahabad-Jhansi, according to PTI.

Why Varanasi Matters

Varanasi is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, which gives the SP wins there extra symbolic weight. The Lucknow Graduates’ win also stands out, as the Daily Jagran calls it a BJP stronghold.

BJP’s Six Seats

The BJP won six seats, including Meerut Graduates’ and Meerut Teachers’ (Dinesh Kumar Goyal and Shri Chand Sharma), plus Lucknow Teachers’ and Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’. Before the polls it also held six of the 11.

What Akhilesh Said

Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP was “completely wiped out” in the elections, per the Daily Jagran. The seat count does not support that: the BJP still won more seats than the SP.

The PDA Question

The SP’s core strategy, PDA, stands for Pichhda (backward classes), Dalit and Alpsankhyak (minorities). The party has framed these results as evidence it is working. These are graduates’ and teachers’ seats with small, educated electorates, so they may not predict how the wider public votes.

What It Means For 2027

PTI described the polls as symbolically important before the 2027 Assembly elections. The BJP still holds a majority of the seats, but it now has reasons to review its Varanasi and Lucknow results.
