The Government of Uttar Pradesh has released a comprehensive three-part update highlighting the state’s dramatic infrastructure transformation since 2017. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has transitioned from a state struggling with poor connectivity to one becoming an emerging national infrastructure hub.
UP Before 2017 CMYogiAdityanath: Broken Roads, Stagnant Economy, Low Investor Confidence
Before 2017, Uttar Pradesh—despite its enormous potential, rich resources and large population—remained disconnected from mainstream development. Roads were damaged, industries struggled to survive, electricity supply was unreliable and the transport system was in poor condition.
Investors often avoided the state due to weak connectivity, lack of safe working environments and absence of effective governance.
2017 Onwards: CM Yogi Adityanath Government Launches Massive Connectivity Mission
The situation changed when the double-engine government took charge in 2017. CM Yogi Adityanath adopted the mantra that “strong infrastructure is the backbone of a developed Uttar Pradesh,” launching a state-wide campaign to overhaul connectivity, transportation and public facilities.
Today, the results are visible across Uttar Pradesh. Roads once filled with potholes have been replaced with world-class expressways. Key projects such as the Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway and the nearly-complete Ganga Expressway are reshaping mobility, economic opportunity and regional integration.
UP is now proudly referred to as the “Expressway State” of India.
UP’s Expressway Expansion Breaks Records
In 2017, the state had barely 1.5 expressways. Today, it boasts:
- 7 fully operational expressways
- 5 expressways under construction
- 10 expressways under survey
This rapid expansion has significantly improved connectivity between major districts, reduced travel time, and boosted industrial and logistics growth. UP’s national highway network has also grown beyond 12,000 km, positioning the state as a key transportation corridor.
Village Roads and Rural Connectivity Also Strengthened
Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the rural road network also saw a major boost:
- 2013–14 total road length: 51,549.23 km
- 2016–17 total road length: 56,846.93 km
- 2024–25 total road length: 77,425.14 km
This improvement has ensured last-mile connectivity, faster access to healthcare, better agricultural transport routes and new livelihood opportunities for rural communities.
From Neglect to New India’s Growth Engine
Uttar Pradesh is now witnessing a large-scale transformation through expressways, airports, rail corridors, industrial zones, smart cities and modern public infrastructure. This progress reflects a new chapter for the state—where governance, vision and trust combine to shape a rapidly developing “New Uttar Pradesh.”
